This beginner course is designed for physicians and other healthcare professionals who want to learn the fundamentals of gallbladder ultrasound and develop a structured approach to assessing patients with suspected gallbladder pathology.

The course focuses on how to obtain the essential ultrasound views, understand the anatomy of the gallbladder and biliary system, recognize common pathological findings, and identify ultrasound features associated with acute cholecystitis.

Throughout the course, we will cover:

• Gallbladder anatomy – understand the relevant anatomy of the gallbladder and biliary system and how it appears on ultrasound.
• Ultrasound technique – learn how to obtain the lateral and subcostal views for a systematic assessment of the gallbladder.
• Gallbladder measurements – learn how to perform relevant measurements and recognize abnormal findings.
• Sonographic Murphy’s sign – understand how to assess for and interpret the sonographic Murphy’s sign.
• Sludge and gallstones – recognize the characteristic ultrasound appearances of biliary sludge and gallstones.
• Acute cholecystitis – identify ultrasound findings associated with acute cholecystitis, including calculous and acalculous cholecystitis.
• Pitfalls – understand common challenges and potential sources of error when performing and interpreting gallbladder ultrasound.
• Clinical management – understand the principles of treatment and management when gallbladder pathology is identified.
